Billy Hicks was voted Most Valuable Player in the 1955 Refrigerator Bowl game after leading the Gamecocks to a major upset over eastern power University of Rhode Island. Hicks, who also played a mean linebacker, ran for 165 yards on 30 carries that day and came up with key tackles to lead JSU to a stunning 12-10 win. Hicks, who weighed 235, could run, block, and tackle with the best. In addition to gaining 455 yards in ‘55, he helped a rugged defense shut out its first 6 opponents, 7 for the year, as JSU compiled a 10-1-0 mark. The Refrigerator Bowl performance was not the only highlight for Hicks in 1955 as the Gamecocks beat Chattanooga, 12-0, for the first time in the season opener. Hicks, who signed a professional football contract with the Washington Redskins, also played with Pittsburgh and Montreal. He had a great football career at Hueytown High School in Hueytown, Alabama.
