George “Blackie” Heath, a Little All-America halfback in 1946, was a key player in Jacksonville State University’s march to greatness on the football field in the early years following World War II. A lightning-quick running back, Heath led the gamecocks in rushing and total offense that first year (’46), then ran for 501 yards and passed for 241 more to help Jacksonville State post an undefeated season in 1947. The Gamecocks came within a point of a second perfect season in 1948. During his first four years (1946-49) at JSU, Heath helped the Gamecocks win two bowl games in three tries. Jacksonville State won the 1948 and ’49 Paper Bowl games in Pensacola, Florida. In addition to the All-America honors, Heath was all-conference three years. As the Gamecock punter, Heath averaged 39.6 yards per try at a time when statisticians subtracted 20 yards each time a punt went into the end zone, a rule that no longer exists. He graduated from Guntersville High School in Guntersville, Alabama.
