Clarkie Mayfield, head coach at Jacksonville State from 1974-76 and offensive coordinator 1963-73, was a key figure in one of the Gamecocks’ richest football eras.  It was Mayfield who installed a powerful offense in the spring of 1970 that paved the way for the Gamecocks’ perfect 10-0-0 run that season and a school record 35.4 points per game in 1973.  Mayfield’s career was cut short in the spring of 1977 when he died in a fire in Cincinnati while attending a retirement party for his mother.  Mayfield played football at the University of Kentucky.
