David Gulledge was a four-year lettermen and one of the most productive quarterbacks in Gamecock football history. He was a two-time All-Gulf South Conference selection, earning the honors in 1989 and 1990, and he finished his career with a school record 48 rushing touchdowns. He was a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded to the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year, in 1989 after passing for 800 yards and rushing for 578 yards as a senior. He helped the Gamecocks to a 9-3 record and the school’s third straight NCAA Division II playoff appearance. In 1989, he was named the GSC Player of the Year after leading the Gamecocks to a 13-1 record and to the NCAA Division II National Championship game. He was instrumental in the Gamecocks’ second consecutive GSC Championship, going a perfect 8-0 in league competition after rushing for 666 yards and 16 touchdowns and passing for 878 yards and four touchdowns. As a sophomore in 1988, he led the Gamecocks to the GSC Title with a 10-2 record and into the NCAA Division II quarterfinals. He set the JSU school record for most rushing touchdowns (16) and finished the season with 927 rushing yards, while passing for 754 yards and five more touchdowns. The Pell City, Ala., native was selected by the National Football League’s Washing ton Redskins in 1990.
