Gary Angel became just the fourth player in Jacksonville State basketball history to score 1,000 points after finishing his four-year career with 1,193 points. He helped the Gamecocks win four straight Alabama Collegiate Conference Championships from 1966-1969, while earning All-ACC and All-Alabama honors as a senior. He averaged 18.7 points-per-game to lead Jax State to a 19-5 record and the school’s first-ever berth into the NAIA playoffs. He finished his junior season by scoring 441 points to earn All-ACC honors as the Gamecocks went 15-11. The Jacksonville, Ala., native scored 203 points as a sophomore while JSU posted an 18-7 record and Angel scored 109 points during his freshman campaign as the team finished with a 16-13 mark.

Following a standout playing career, Angel began his lifelong career in the construction business, building thousands of houses for the residents of Calhoun County. The Angel community just west of Jax State's campus along AL Hwy 204 still bears his name for the work his company did in developing the area. Angel passed away in 2019 at the age of 71.
