During a great 32-year career at Oneonta and Cleveland, Hugh O’Shields distinguished himself as one of the premier high school football coaches in Alabama history. In addition to posting a 34-game unbeaten streak and three perfect seasons, O’Shields’ team won two state championships. Overall, the personable O’Shields posted a 243-74-13 record. Alabama’s first prep coach to win 200 games learned the tricks of the trade at Jacksonville State where he played for the Gamecocks three years (1948-50). Each of those teams played in the Paper Bowl.
