J. P. Cain was a member of the 1947 undefeated football team and captain of the 1950 squad for Coach Don Salls. He played on three consecutive Paper Bowl teams during that time as a starter at center and linebacker. In addition to being a member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, Cain has also been inducted into both the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame and the Hartselle High School Football Hall of Fame. In fact, the football stadium at Hartselle is named in his honor. Cain coached at Hartselle from 1957-69, with his best team being the 1964 squad that went 8-1-1 and finished No. 3 in the state. In 1968, he was selected head coach of the North team in the annual North-South All-Star game.
