John Krochina, an Amsterdam, N.Y. native, lettered three years in both football and basketball during a career that spanned from `1950-1953. He led Jax State in rushing (541 yards), passing (228 yards, 4 Tds.), and scoring (36 points) in 1950, helping the Gamecocks to a 6-1-2 record and a berth in the Paper Bowl. He also returned eight punts for 155 yards, had nine kickoffs for 310 yards, and intercepted a team-high seven passes for 70 yards. In ’52 he once again led the team in kickoff and punt returns, was tops in interceptions with three, and was the second leading scorer on the squad. As a basketball player, Krochina scored 15 points to tie for high point honors in JSU’s upset win over a 1952 Alabama team that three years later would win the Southeastern Conference title and produce the famous “Rocket Eight” squad. It was JSU’s one and only win in nine tries against a Crimson Tide basketball team.
