Neal Posey, a native of Gardendale, lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Jacksonville from 1946-48, and then began his illustrious coaching career. After a one-year stint at Dothan, he went to Montgomery’s Sidney Lanier High School, where he coached both baseball and basketball from 1949-56. Although his team never won a state basketball championship, the Poet’s baseball team captured six state crowns as he compiled a record of 118-20. In 1957, then Huntingdon College President Hubert Searcy contacted Posey about starting an athletic program at the private Methodist college, and Posey jumped at the chance, leaving a lasting mark as a basketball coach. From 1957-1980, he led his teams to 22 winning seasons, produced seven conference championships, five district titles, was named District “Coach of the Year” five times and compiled a career record of 615-291. In 1983, Posey was selected as one of Jacksonville State’s 100 Greatest Athletes, and in March of 1989, he was named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Hall of Fame, the highest honor one can achieve from the NAIA.
