Ray Vinson, Little All-America for the Gamecocks in 1966, was one of the most versatile players in Jacksonville State football history. As a freshman tailback in 1963, he led the Gamecocks in rushing (723 yards) and passing (483) on the way to All-Conference honors. Moved to defensive back and wide receiver as a sophomore, Vinson responded by making Little All-America. In addition to setting a new Alabama Collegiate Conference record with 10 interceptions in ‘66, he returned 62 kickoffs for 833 yards, 66 punts for 502 yards, and 16 interceptions to set new career records. While it was his defensive accomplishments that made it possible for the A_A hojnors and a professional contract with the San Diego Chargers, it was his leadership ability and fiery play that made Vinson a JSU Hall of Fame athlete and the reason teammates elected him team captain. During his four years at JSU, the Gamecocks won or shared four ACC titles and defeated Arkansas A & M in the Space City Classic. Vinson graduated from Oxford High School in Oxford, Alabama.
