Sammy Davis, a 6-5, 215-pound shortstop with speed and power, led the nation with 25 homers in 1977 and was one of the top draft choices among college players that season. In addition to the 25 homers, Davis was the star of stars on a team that saw 11 players into professional contracts. Davis, one of three brothers to play for the Gamecocks, hit .403 combined with 10 doubles and 56 RBI that year as the Gamecocks won the Gulf South Conference and advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the third straight year. The final game for the GSC title typified Davis and the Gamecocks in 1977. Jacksonville State hit 8 homers and won the championship game, 23-3, against a strong Nicholls State team. Jax State hit 7 homers in the first game of the playoffs. Davis was named first team All-America by the Sporting News and NCAA, the only Gamecock baseball player in history to make more than one A-A team in one season. A two-time all-conference standout, Davis signed a professional contract with the Cleveland Indians. Davis played at Osborne High School in Marietta, Georgia.
