Ted Barnicle (1975) was considered one of the top strikeout artist in JacksonvilleStateand Gulf South Conference history. Barnicle, the first Jax State athlete to be selected in the first round of a professional draft, averaged 18 strikeouts per game to lead the Gamecocks to the 1975 GSC championship and a national playoff spot.Barnicle’s fast ball, clocked at 97 mph by pro scouts, cut down 21 Sewanee batters to established a GSC standard for regular season play and playoff mark.For his efforts, Barnicle was named to the SPORTING NEWS and NCAA All-American teams.
Barnicle became the first college pitcher drafted in 1975 when he went 8th overall to the San Francisco Giants.He would pitch nine seasons in the Giants and Chicago White Sox systems registering 35 wins. He tossed 28 complete games and four shutouts.
