JSU Rifle Wins Fifth Straight OVC Championship

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After claiming the smallbore portion on Friday, the Jacksonville State Rifle team finished with a 2,324 points to win the Ohio Valley Conference Air Rifle title on Sunday while sealing its fifth straight overall League Championship in the process.

The Gamecocks swept the league's top honors with Head Coach Ron Frost being named the OVC Coach of the Year. Brian Carstensen was selected the OVC Freshman of the Year and the Smallbore Athlete of the Year while Michael Dickinson was the OVC Air Rifle Athlete of the Year.

Carstensen and Dickinson were also named First-Team All-OVC in smallbore and air rifle while Carstensen also earned All-OVC Newcomer honors in smallbore and air rifle.

Andrea Dardas was named All-OVC Air Rifle Newcomer and to the First-Team Air Rifle squads while teammate Phil Huckaby earned First-Team All-OVC Smallbore and Second-Team All-OVC Air Rifle honors.

The Gamecocks finished the weekend with a team aggregate final score of 4.628 points to win the overall title over UT Martin and Morehead State with 4,515 points. Murray State was fourth with 4,489 points and UT Martin Women had 4,362 points.

Murray State was second in the air rifle with 2,289 points followed by Tennessee Tech and UTM Mixed (2,262 points), Morehead State (2,256 points) and UT Martin Women (2,193 points).

Dickinson led the way for JSU in the air rifle on the afternoon, totaling 588 points followed by Carstensen with 583 points. Dardas had 581 points and Huckaby finished with 572 points.

The Gamecocks return to action on Saturday at the NCAA Sectionals.
