FORT WORTH, Tex. – The first day of the 2009 NCAA Rifle Championships came to an end with Jacksonville State on top with a final smallbore score of 2312 and the day's top performance went to JSU's Brian Carstensen who fired a 587.
Carstensen, who was selected the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and the Smallbore Athlete of the Year just last month, helped the Gamecocks claim their second Smallbore title in the last three years. JSU also won the event at the 2006 NCAA Rifle National Championships.
“We thought we had a good chance at winning the smallbore title,” said JSU head coach Ron Frost. “We shot really well in sectionals last month and that gave us the confidence that we needed to come out and post a good score today.”
After four flights of action, Carstensen sat atop the leader board three shots ahead of Kentucky's Ashley Jackson total of 584. Jacksonville State's Michael Dickson and Mattie Brogdon (TCU) both tallied 581 points to tie for third.
In the smallbore finals, the top eight shooters took aim with Carstensen coming out on top with a score of 95.2, making his aggregate score for the day 682.2. Jackson finished second in the final round, firing a 98.1. She ended the day with an aggregate score of 682.1. Brogdon, freshman from finished the day in third scoring 679.1 on the aggregate.
This season, Jacksonville State won 12 consecutive events after a third place finish at the Memphis Invitational to open the season en route to its fifth straight overall Ohio Valley Conference title last month.
“Now, we will set out sights on the Air portion on Saturday and out team is really looking forward to shooting. We just have a one point lead over Kentucky, so it should set up for an exciting finish.”
The Gamecocks hold a slim lead over Kentucky entering the final day of competition, which is hosted by Texas Christian. JSU has been successful in their last two trips to the NCAA Rifle Championships, finishing second overall in 2005 while winning the NCAA Air Rifle title, and will be looking for their first overall National Championship on Saturday.
