FORT WORTH, Tex. – Jacksonville State finished with an aggregate score of 4636 to finish third at the NCAA Rifle National Championship as West Virginia captured its 14th national title, just seven points ahead of the Gamecocks.
It was the third time that Jax State has finished in the Top 3 in the last five years as the Gamecocks finished second in 2005 and third in 2007.
The Mountaineers won the team air rifle competition by shooting a staggering 2353, well ahead of Navy's second place finish of 2327 and Jacksonville State's third place score of 2324.
"When you look at the scores among the top three finishers, it was separated by just a few points," said JSU head coach Ron Frost. "West Virginia came back strong today and shot really well and ended up on top and my hats off to them."
The Gamecocks held a one-point lead over Kentucky heading into Saturday's air rifle competition and was led by Simone Riford's total of 585, while Mattie Brogdon scored a total of 581. Erin Lorenzen and Lauren Sullivan both finished the day with a score of 579.
Kentucky finished second, just two points ahead of the Gamecocks with a total of 4638, in the race for the overall title.
JSU's Brian Carstensen won the Smallbore National Championship on Friday with a score of 587. Carstensen, who was selected the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and the Smallbore Athlete of the Year, helped the Gamecocks claim their second Smallbore title in the last three years. JSU also won the event at the 2006 NCAA Rifle National Championships.
"I'm proud of our shooters for the season that we had, we entered the season ranked tenth and were able to finish in third place," Frost added. "I think that is a credit to our players and the way they have worked all season."
This season, Jacksonville State won 12 consecutive events after a third place finish at the Memphis Invitational to open the season en route to its fifth straight overall Ohio Valley Conference title last month.
