OXFORD, Miss. – The Jacksonville State rifle team opened the 2011-12 season with an impressive showing at the Ole Miss Invitational this past weekend. The Gamecocks finished with a team aggregate score of 4641. Complete team standings will be available once the invitational has completed this weekend in Oxford.
Jax State posted a 2301 in the smallbore, while recording a mark of 2340 in the air rifle portion. JSU sophomore Sam Muegge won gold in the smallbore with a score of 584. Andrea Dardas, the lone senior on the squad, won top individual honors in the air rifle section with a 591. The Essexville, Mi.-native finished runner-up to Muegge in the smallbore competition after tallying a 580.
“Our season opener went fairly well,” said head coach Ron Frost. “We won't know the full results of how we fared against the other teams until all the participating teams have competed and the invitational scores are complete, but I am satisfied with the team scores that we shot.
A pair of JSU newcomers had stellar opening weekend results as Brent Books carded a 572 in smallbore and Cole Tucker turned in a 578 in air rifle. Junior Monica Fyfe added a 584 to the Jax State air rifle score and a 565 in smallbore.
“As it currently stands, seeing that we performed as well as we did at the Ole Miss Invitational, I believe that we probably already have one of the necessary three high scores, required to obtain a bid for a slot at Nationals, behind us,” added Frost. “This already takes some of the pressure off of us for the remainder of the season. If we build upon that score and continue to improve throughout the next few months, I have no doubt that the team will be able to look forward to another successful season.”
The Gamecocks return to the range on Saturday, Oct. 1, going head-to-head against Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State in Morehead, Ky.
