MARTIN, Tenn. – Jacksonville State claimed its sixth Ohio Valley Conference Rifle Championship on Sunday at the 2012 OVC Rifle Championships held on the UT Martin campus.
JSU, who held the top spot after the smallbore competition, clinched the title with a 2328 in the air rifle portion of the championship. With its 2303 mark in smallbore, Jax State tallied a 2328 to win the OVC Air Rifle crown. The Gamecocks posted an aggregate score of 4631, which was 42 points better than second place Murray State. JSU held an 18-point advantage over the Racers after smallbore and finished 24 points ahead of MSU in air rifle.
With the overall league title, the rifle team brought home JSU's 48th OVC Championship since joining the league in 2003-04.
Senior Andrea Dardas won the individual air rifle title after carding a 589. Sophomore Sam Muegge, who won top smallbore honors on Saturday, continued to put impressive numbers up in air rifle as he finished with a 583. He shared second place with JSU's Monica Fyfe, who also registered a 583. Freshmen Cole Tucker and Brent Brooks rounded out the individual scores with a 573 and 570 respectively.
“It is an amazing feeling to win the OVC this year since it is my final year,” said Dardas. “Now I get to wear a ring on each hand.”
The Gamecocks dominated the All-OVC First Team in both smallbore and air rifle. Dardas and Muegge were named to both squads, while Dan McCall earned a spot on the smallbore squad. Fyfe was tabbed to the air rifle first team as well. Jordan Fraser was a Second Team Smallbore honoree. McCall was one of three individuals to be awarded the league's top newcomer.
Jax State Head Coach Ron Frost was voted the 2012 Coach of the Year by his peers. It marks his fourth time to win the honor.
“I am so proud of this team for coming together to win the league under different circumstances with paper targets,” said head coach Ron Frost. “That was the focus of our training – practicing with paper targets and I think it showed with the scores we had. It fells good to bring home another OVC Championship home to Jacksonville.”
The UTM Mixed team finished third, followed by Morehead State and the Skyhawk women's team.
The Gamecocks will now prepare for NCAA Sectionals on Feb. 16-18 in Fairbanks, Ak. The NCAA Championships will be held at Ohio State University on March 9-10.
