JACKSONVILLE – In a duel of two of the top teams in the nation in rifle, the seventh-ranked Jacksonville State rifle team fell one-point two points shy of knocking off second-ranked Alaska on Thursday at the Gamecock Rifle Range.
Alaska finished with an aggregate score of 4674 to edge JSU, who turned in a 4673 combined score. The smallbore portion of the match was the deciding factor as the Nanooks tallied a 2320. Jax State registered a 2319. Both teams finished the air rifle section with a pair of 2354 marks.
Ryan Anderson of Alaska claimed medalist honors in smallbore with a 586, while Alaska's Sherry Tim won air rifle with a 594.
The Gamecocks were led by junior Dan McCall in smallbore with a 584, while junior Cole Tucker finished second in air rifle with a final tally of 591. Sophomore Samantha Bullard claimed bronze in smallbore with a 581 and a 589 in air rifle. Senior Sam Muegge finished air rifle with a score of 587. Freshman Brandon Muske equaled Muegge's mark to share fifth place with Muegge.
JSU returns to action on Nov. 17 as it travels to Fort Worth, Texas to face Texas Christian University and Air Force.
