BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State placed a school-record 128 student-athletes on the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll as the league announced a record number of student athletes named to the list on Friday.
It was a banner year in the classroom for the Gamecocks after 14 teams posted a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and it marked the fourth-straight year the department finished above a 3.0, with a cumulative 3.15 grade point average, the highest in school history. As a matter of fact, a total of 179 Gamecocks student-athletes posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher during the academic year, which is more than 64 percent of all of JSU's student-athletes.
"We are extremely proud of the work by our student-athletes in the classroom over the past academic year," said JSU Interim Athletic Director Greg Seitz. "Our student-athletes work hard to meet the high standards that come with being a part of this department and I want to congratulate them on the results in the classroom."
To be listed, recipients must have achieved at least a 3.25 grade point average and have been eligible and on the team throughout the competitive season in their chosen NCAA-sponsored sport(s) and used a season of competition.
The Gamecocks had a total of 128 student-athletes named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor roll, led by the football program with 28 recipients on the list, followed by women's soccer with 15. Three other JSU teams had double figure totals on the list with the track and field team placing 14 honorees, followed by softball with 12, and baseball had 11 student-athletes earn the honor.
"Our coaches and academic staff deserve credit for doing an outstanding job, and I can't say enough about the work by Dr. Janet Moore and the rest of the staff in the University's Academic Center for Excellence, especially Todd Wilson," added Seitz. "Along with our athletic academic advisors of Tracy Broom, Mike Davis and Sunsea Shaw, our student-athletes are taking care of business academically, while also being successful athletically."
For the 2014-15 academic year 1,274 student-athletes were recognized for performance in the classroom, topping the mark of 1,255 the previous year. Over the past 10 years the OVC has honored over 10,500 student-athletes with the Commissioner's Honor Roll award.
"We are immensely proud of these students because they have not only achieved on the playing field but also in the classroom," said OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche. "These students have demonstrated a sense of balance already in their lives which is important to life-long success. From the League perspective we are proud because we have had continual growth in the number of honorees which demonstrates the Conference's sustaining commitment to the broader student-athlete experience."
The OVC will announce the recipients of the Academic Medal of Honor presented by Army ROTC, the Academic Achievement Award and the Team Academic Achievement Awards next week.
