
Gamecock Rifle Opens 2018-19 Campaign On Strong Note

JACKSONVILLE – The nationally-ranked Jacksonville State rifle team opened the 2018-19 season with a string start at Ole Miss.
The Gamecocks, ranked 13th in the National Rifle Coaches Association Preseason Poll, posted an aggregate score of 4666 in Oxford, Mississippi on Saturday. JSU tallied a strong smallbore score with a 2317, while accumulating a 2349 in air rifle. Jax State finished 21 points ahead of the Rebels, who started the season ranked ninth in the NRCA poll. UM tabulated a final score of 4645.
Seniors David Sink and Mekenna Richardson highlighted JSU's smallbore effort as Sink turned a team-best 585. Richardson was two marks back of him with a 583. Freshman Owen Goad, who was making his collegiate debut, added a 582, which was a personal best for the Chatham, Virginia native. The trio of Sink, Richardson and Goad claimed the top-three smallbore scores.
Freshman Mackenzie Van Patten also had a solid start to her JSU career with a personal best 575 in smallbore and placed seventh in the discipline.
In air rifle, Richardson and junior Zach Schmidt paced the squad, tying for third place in air rifle.
JSU returns to action in two weeks, traveling to North Georgia on October 13.
