
Gamecock Rifle Dominates The Citadel

JACKSONVILLE – In a rematch with The Citadel in as many weeks, the nationally ranked Jacksonville State rifle team turned in another dominating performance over the Bulldogs.
After the two teams competed against each other in Charleston, South Carolina, JSU and The Citadel had a dual match at the Gamecock Rifle Range inside Rowe Hall. The 14th-ranked Gamecocks were 93 points better than 21st-ranked Bulldogs as they accumulated an aggregate score of 4642, the second-best mark of the season for JSU. The Citadel turned in a 4549, while The Citadel women's squad finished with a 3596. JSU registered a 2336 in air rifle and added a 2306 in smallbore.
Junior Sam Payne claimed medalist honors with the combined score of 1167. Payne, from Cartersville, Georgia collected a 588 in air rifle and a 579 in smallbore. Payne was atop a list of six of the top-10 finishers from JSU. Sophomore Mackenzie Van Patten finished two marks back of Payne in the individual standings with an 1165. Van Patten fired the top score in air rifle with a 589 and posted a 576 in smallbore.
JSU's Owen Goad and Zach Schmidt shared third place with overall scores of 1155. Goad led the field in smallbore with a 580. Schmidt tallied a 584 in air rifle to bolster JSU's air rifle mark. Kaila Jones and Carleigh Peters rounded out the top-six finishers. Jones recorded an 1146 total score, while Peters added an 1144.
Jax State will host the annual Gamecock Invitational over the next two weekends at the Gamecock Rifle Range inside Rowe Hall.
