Women's Basketball Returns To The Pete To Face Southern Miss

JACKSONVILLE – Women's basketball returns to Pete Mathews Coliseum Thursday for a showdown against Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m.

Last Time Out
Jax State is coming off a 66-54 loss at North Alabama on Monday, Nov. 10. Jax State went down as many as 25 to North Alabama before a late 9-0 run cut it to a 12-point game. The clock was not in favor of Jax State's late game comeback attempt. In the loss, Jax State out-rebounded UNA 46-40.
 
Hobdy Shines
Junior Shelton State transfer Makala Hobdy shined in Monday's loss to the Lions for Jax State with a team-high 16 points and eight boards. The point guard from Troy, Ala., shot 6-14 from the field and 2-6 from three in her 30 minutes of action.
 
Barnes Preseason Honors
Senior forward Mya Barnes was selected to the 2025-26 Preseason All-CUSA Team. Barnes averaged 7.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks on 27.8 min­utes per game last season. Barnes' 1.2 blocks per game and 35 total blocks ranked her fifth in the league in both categories last season.
 
Program Ties with Southern Miss
Current graduate assistant for Jax State, Deshawn Montgomery, was a manager for the Southern Miss's women's basketball team while completing undergrad. Former Gamecock Kennedy Gavin was a transfer from the Golden Eagles. Gavin's collegiate career concluded in 2023.
 
Other Noteworthy Performances
Along with Hobdy, Adriana Jones scored double figures against UNA with 10 points. Jones pulled down four rebounds and had a team-high two assists. Maria Sanchez-Ponce scored seven points and added five rebounds. Mya Barnes grabbed seven rebounds, had two steals, two blocks, and an assist against the Lions.
 
Series History
Thursday's game against Southern Miss marks the fifth time Jax State has faced the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss holds a 3-1 all-time record over the Gamecocks. Southern Miss won the first ever meeting on Nov. 28, 1997, by a score of 68-66. The Golden Eagles won the most recent meeting 75-58 on Nov. 25, 2011.
