JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – For the seventh week of the cross country season, Jax State once again has representatives for the Conference USA Freshman of the Week awards for the fourth time this year by the same duo of Gamecocks.
Â
Shadrack Kipkurgat won the CUSA Men's Freshman of the Week award with Mercy Sergon winning the CUSA Women's Freshman of the Week honor following dominant performances at the Kennemer Classic in Florence, Ala. this past weekend.
Â
The pair are coming off last week's sweep of all four conference weekly awards as the conference championship approaches in two weeks.
Â
Kipkurgat set the new school record in the men's 8k, finishing his race at 23:16.0 to finish first overall and assist Jax State to a team title for the men's event. In the women's race, Sergon defeated the rest of the 106-runner field by over 35 seconds, running her 5k in 16:32.5 to break the school record and help the women's squad to a team title as well.Â
Â
The duo will make their next appearance in the postseason, with the CUSA Championship set for Oct. 31 in Huntsville, Ala.
