In their final tournament before the Conference USA Championship, Jax State took fifth at the Golfweek/Stifel Spring Challenge at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawley's Island, S.C.
Jax State had the best third-round score in the field with an eight-over 292 to move up two spots on the leaderboard into a tie for fifth with Morehead State, posting a 54-hole team total of 886 (+34). Middle Tennessee won the event at +24, followed by Coastal Carolina (+27), Samford (+29), and Charleston Southern (+33).
Following a 300 in the first round, the Gamecocks came back six shots better on Tuesday, and shaved two more shots of on Wednesday.
"This team continues to show perseverance and grit throughout the tournaments we've played this spring to improve each round and as a whole this season," said coach
Robbie Fields. "Capping off the regular season schedule with the best round of the day is proof of the effort these ladies have put in to getting better for the most important time of the season. I am proud of them and look forward to competing alongside them for a conference championship."
As a team, Jax State had a tournament-high 44 birdies.
Rachel Camp posted her first top 10 of the season, taking seventh after an even-par round of 71 in the second, and going two-under in the third to move up 17 spots over the last 18 holes.
"Rachel hasn't had the easiest season, but she has shown up with full effort regardless all year," said Fields. "She was able to find some freedom and confidence this week to play the kind of golf we know she's capable of and I'm proud of her for that."
After shooting 77, Camp had four birdies in the second round and four more in the third.
Julie Kleppe was 10
th with a seven-over total of 220. The freshman posted rounds of 73, 72, and 75.
"Julie has been playing some exciting golf lately, so it was only a matter of time before she earned her first top 10," said Fields. "(Coach) Shelly (Chen) has done an excellent job on the course with her to give her confidence and reassurance to play some quality golf this early in her career."
Kleppe was fifth in the field in Par 5 scoring at 4.75, playing those holes at three-under, and was second in the field in total birdies with 12.
Rebekka Stutley was 40
th with a 16-over total of 229, posting rounds of 74, 73, and 82.
Lara El Chaib was a shot back in 45
th, jumping up the leaderboard 34 spots with a one-under round of 70 on Wednesday after rounds of 81 and 79.
Ebby Somers rounded out the roster in 55
th with a total of 232, posting rounds of 76, 78, and 78.
The Gamecocks will be back on the course on April 20
th at the Conference USA Championship at Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco, Texas.
