Boyce Callahan (’73), a 5-7, 155-pound bundle of dynamite, averaged 100 yards per game rushing during his illustrious four-year career at JSU. To recognize the outstanding achievements, Callahan’s jersey (33) was retired at the end of his senior season. Callahan’s first season (1970) was perhaps his best. In that memorable fall, he rolled up 1293 yards to lead JSU to a perfect 10-0-0 mark and a win over Florida A & M in the Orange Blossom Classic in Miami, Florida, earning most valuable player honors. He still holds almost every school rushing record. Callahan’s major single game marks include 275 yards against North Alabama in ’70, 13.2 yards per carry against NE Louisiana in ’73, and 39 rushing attempts vs. Livingston in ’72. The top career records held by Callahan include most yards rushing (4237), touchdowns rushing (40), points (240), and attempts rushing (800). Callahan made NAIA and Associated Press Little All-America Team in ’73.
