JACKSONVILLE - When
Jacksonville State hosts Stephen F. Austin this Saturday, the Gamecocks will have a different, but familiar look.
In honor of the 10th anniversary of the 1992 NCAA Division II National Championship, the Gamecocks are going to be wearing the Gamecock decal worn by that Championship team on Saturday's helmets.
JSU head coach
Jack Crowe says the Gamecocks will wear the helmet decal to "tie history to the present."
"I'm taking advantage of an opportunity that this 1992 team is coming here,"
Crowe said on Friday. "But the timing of it is with, what I feel like, an opportunity to raise the caliber of play. I'm going to try to tie history to the present by having our players wear this logo and then we'll talk about it after the game what we're going to do with it for the rest of the year."
The 1992 Gamecocks finished at 12-1-1 and defeated Pittsburg State 17-12 in the title game after Saks native
Eric King batted away a Gorilla pass with :29 left to give JSU its first football championship and the sixth title in school history. The team will be recognized during pregame on Saturday.
Jax State entertains the Lumberjacks on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Paul Snow Stadium.
