JACKSONVILLE - Senior quarterback Reggie Stancil came off the bench to throw for 139 yards and two touchdowns to lead Jacksonville State (4-2, 1-1) to a 28-22 come-from-behind win over Sam Houston State (2-4, 0-1) in a Southland Conference game in front of 6,449 fans at Paul Snow Stadium Saturday.
Stancil entered the game for Anthony Mayo midway through the second quarter after Mayo left with a partially torn ACL. Mayo will undergo a MRI on Monday to examine the extent of his injury.
Sam Houston State jumped out to a 13-0 lead after Vance Smith tossed a four-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter and Jason Godfrey added a five-yard scoring run with 8:32 left in the second quarter, buy Joey Price missed the second extra point for the Bearkats.
The Gamecocks then took the kickoff and went 50 yards in nine plays and scored after Ralph Jenkins caught a 22-yard touchdown strike from Stancil with 5:03 left in the first half. Steven Lee's extra point was no good after hitting the upright and SHSU held a 13-6 lead.
Sam Houston State's defense then held the Gamecocks on fourth down at the 1-foot line with 1:21 left in the half and the Bearkats took over on downs. But, the Gamecock defense came up with their second safety of the season when Adrian Ragland sacked SHSU quarterbackTravis Tobaben in the end zone to cut the lead to 13-8.
On the ensuing kick-off, the Gamecocks drove to the SHSU 49-yard line with :03 left in the half and Stancil connected on a 49-yard touchdown pass to Jenkins as time expired in the half to give JSU a 14-13 lead. Jenkins finished the game with four receptions for a season-high 91 yards.
The Gamecocks then pushed the lead to 21-13 at the 12:19 mark of the third quarter after senior Markee Coleman intercepted a Bearkat pass and raced 53 yards for the touchdown. Lee's extra point gave JSU the eight-point lead.
The Bearkats then marched 62 yards in eight plays and scored on a Godfrey one-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter, but the try for two failed and the Gamecocks held a 21-19 advantage.
Jax State then pushed the lead to nine points after Kory Chapman scored on a 4-yard run to cap an 80-yard, 11 play drive. Lee's extra point gave JSU a 28-19 lead with 9:49 left in the game. Chapman finished with a career-high 72 yards on 17 carries and also added 93 yards on three kick returns.
Sam Houston State then added a Price 41-yard field goal with 8:35 left for the final margin. SHSU's offense was led by Stevie Smith, who finished with 145 yards on 22 carries. Tobaben also was 9-for-18 for 110 yards.
Jax State travels to Lake Charles, La., next week to face No. 3 McNeese State in a crucial SLC game. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. from Cowboy Stadium.
