JSU Claims 81-68 Win Over West Georgia

STATESBORO, Ga. - Mark Myers rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown and Chaz Williams added 103 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 4 Georgia Southern to a 41-3 win over Jacksonville State at a rain soaked Paulson Stadium on Saturday.
"This is a tough way to end the season," said JSU head coach Jack Crowe. "We gave up too many big plays on the ground, but you have to give credit to Georgia Southern. There's a reason they are ranked No. 4 in the country and lead the nation in rushing and total offense."
Georgia Southern finished the game with 493 yards on the ground and 569 yards of total offense. The Eagles had four rushing touchdowns that went for more than 30 yards.
The Eagles took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter after Williams his first touchdown on a one-yard quarterback sneek. Scott Shelton kicked the point after to cap a 76-yard, five play drive as the Eagles took the lead at the 5:54 mark of the first quarter.
Georgia Southern pushed the lead to 14-0 after the Eagles intercepted their second pass of the half. Three plays later, Zzream Walden raced 32 yards for the touchdown and Shelton added the point with 10:47 left in the second quarter to hold the lead at the half.
GSU then took a 17-0 lead with 10:14 remaining in the third quarter after Shelton kicked his first field goal of the day, good from 32 yards out.
The Gamecocks got on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter after Steven Lee kicked a 24-yard field goal to cut the lead to 17-3.
But Georgia Southern answered by tacking on two touchdowns over the final four minutes of the quarter. The first one came on a 71-yard touchdown scamper by Williams with 4:03 remaining that gave GSU a 24-3 lead.
After forcing a Gamecock punt, the Eagles struck quickly again after Myers broke loose to score on a 53-yard run and Shelton added the point after to give GSU a 31-3 lead with 1:00 left in the third quarter.
Shelton then kicked a 33-yard field goal at the 11:16 mark of the fourth quarter as the Eagles built a 34-3 lead and Kevin Davis added a 68 yard touchdown run with 6:09 left in the game to seal the win.
JSU's Rondy Rogers led the Gamecock offense with 121 yards on 21 carries. It was the Birmingham natives 11th career 100-yard rushing game and he finished his career with 3,143 rushing yards. It marked just the third time this season an opponent running back reached triple-digits on the ground against Georgia Southern
Jacksonville State ends the 2002 season with a 5-6 overall record, while Georgia Southern improved to 9-2 on the season.

Senior Rondy Rogers rushed for a season-high 121 yards on 21 carries. It was the 11th career 100-yard rushing game for the Birmingham native. It was his second 100-yard rushing game this season after rushing for 113 yards vs Samford. He finished his career with 3,143 yards on 599 carries and 28 touchdowns.
Freshman Maurice Mullins entered the game at quarterback at the 10:36 mark of the second quarter. It marks the third time this season the freshman has played quarterback. He debuted at the position against Mississippi State and also saw action vs Stephen F. Austin.
Senior Reggie Stancil entered the game at quarterback at the 1:58 mark of the second quarter. He finished the game 6-for-14 for 36 yards. Senior Reggie Stancil finished his career with 5,182 passing yards and 35 touchdowns.
JSU completed its first pass of the day at the 9:43 mark of the third quarter when Anthony Mayo completed an 11-yard pass to Jarvis Houston.
JSU finished with just 56 yards passing, the fewest for the Gamecocks this season and the first time JSU did not record 100 yards since Nov. 18,2000, vs Troy State when JSU finished with 94 yards.
Sophomore All-American punter Richie Rhodes finished the game with 9 punts for 415 yards and an average of 46.1 yards per punt. Rhodes also had a season-long punt of 68 yards late in the fourth quarter and had one punt inside the 20.
When Chaz Williams raced 71 yards for a touchdown at the 3:56 mark of the third quarter, it marked the first rushing touchdown allowed by the Gameocks during the third quarter this season. It was also the longest rushing touchdown this season.
The last time an opponent had 500 yards of total offense was Stephen F. Austin (10/26/02) when the Lumberjacks finished with 512 yards.
The Gamecocks allowed four rushing touchdowns on runs of longer than 30 yards. GSU had TD runs of 32, 53, 68 and 71. The 71 yard touchdown run by Chaz Williams was the longest rushing touchdown allowed by the Gamecocks this season.
JSU finished just 2-of-16 on 3rd down conversions for the game, but did go 2-for-3 on 4th down conversions.
Senior Jermaine Hoyt finished with a season-high nine tackles, including one for a six yard loss.
The JSU defense failed to get a turnover, for just the second time this season. JSU did not record a turnover against Mississippi State.
