LORMAN, Miss. - Senior
Jay Heard scored 15 points to lead four Gamecocks in double figures as Jacksonville State (5-1) claimed a 74-67 win over Alcorn State (1-6) and snapped a 13-game home winning streak for the Braves on Saturday.
Senior
Omar Barlett finished with 13, while
James Denson added 12 and
Poonie Richardson tossed in 10 for the Gamecocks.
"This was a good win for our team," said JSU head coach
Mike LaPlante. "Anytime you get a win on the road, especially against a team that doesn't drop too many home games, it's a big confidence booster."
Jax State, which claimed its first sweep of the season after defeating the Braves 75-72 just 15 days ago, is off to its best start since moving to Division I in 1995-96.
Alcorn State, picked to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference, held an early 12-7 lead, but the Gamecocks battled to take their first lead of the night on a 3-pointer by
Scott Watson at the top of the key at the 12:05 mark of the first half.
Alcorn then pushed the lead to 21-17 before JSU scored the next 10 points to take a 27-21 advantage with 4:32 left. A pair of treys by
Richardson and
Heard and a lay-up by
Barlett and two free throws by
Richardson gave the Gamecocks their largest lead of the first half.
Jacksonville State, which shot a season-low 31.3 percent in the first half, managed to hold a 31-27 lead at the intermission.
Alcorn State battled back in the second half to take a 47-46 lead on a pair of free throws by
Lee Cook with almost 11 minutes left in the game.
Cook finished with a career-high 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Braves.
The Gamecocks fought back to take the lead for good with 3:40 left on a pair of
Emerson Brown free throws. JSU led by as many as seven points over the final two minutes of the game after hitting 16-of-22 free throws over the final half.
Jacksonville State continues its five game road trip by traveling to Maine University this weekend before taking off for the Christmas holidays.
