JACKSONVILLE STATE HEAD FOOTBALL COACH JACK CROWE
COMMENTING ON THE 2002 JSU FOOTBALL SIGNEES
"Our signing class, on paper and in our evaluations, met our needs.
"Starting with speed -- William Cumbie Xavier Brooks, and Craig Williams are all speed players and guys who can impact the game, either in coverage or with the football. We have some impact type players in lineman like Jason Allen as an offensive lineman and Jeremy Minsey as a defensive lineman. This class also had a quarterback we have high regard for in Maurice Mullins.
"A lot of a players, we feel like, will develop as linemen and a couple big running backs that will be able to run the power type of football that we need to be able to offset the passing game and control the ball on defense. All in all, it was a complete class that met our needs. It's a class that has strong academics and players who have received a lot of recognition as productive players recognized as All-State or all-stars in their area which means they are recognized competitors.
" I think it is a Division I recruiting class. A majority of the guys that we recruited were recruited by Division I schools. Through the course of the year, it was obvious that we have improved the perception of our program as a competitive Division I football program."
Q: "Was there any one area that you guys went after?"
"The priority for us was speed players and we didn't need a lot but we needed some guys who could impact the game, in coverage or receiving that it where Cumbie and Brooks give us along with Craig Williams. Two of them being from Florida, being sprinters in track. And Craig was the 2A Florida Player-of-the-Year. Then locally Brooks was from Anniston High School. These are the type of players who can give you 25 yard gains and prevent 25 yard gains that can change the momentum and give you solid gains."
