JACKSONVILLE -- Former Gamecock All-American Montressa Kirby has been hired to coach wide receivers, Jacksonville State head football coach Jack Crowe announced Tuesday.
Kirby, a native of Anniston, was the 1998 Southland Football League Offensive Player-of-the-Year and is JSU's all-time leader in total offense (7,688 yards) and second all-time leading passer (6,587). He led the Gamecocks to a 7-4 record as a senior.
"We're very confident Montressa will come in here and do an outstanding job for this team," Crowe said as the Gamecocks prepare for two-a-day workouts this week. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and playing experience from his days as a record setting quarterback here at JSU."
Kirby, 25, is the starting quarterback for the Birmingham Steeldogs of the af2 indoor league and has posted a 12-5 record following a 65-51 win over rival Tennessee Valley in the first round of the playoffs last weekend. Kirby has passed for 3,377 yards and 73 touchdowns this season and helped the Steeldogs to their first ever post-season win.
Jacksonville State, pre-season picked No. 2 in the Southland Conference behind McNeese State, will send the newcomers on the field for the first practice on Wednesday with the veterans reporting on Thursday.
