JACKSONVILLE - After recording a total of 17 saves in back-to-back double overtime games, Jacksonville State goalkeeper
Amanda Stephens has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week.
Stephens, a sophomore from Humble, Texas, recorded seven saves during the Gamecocks 1-1 tie with defending conference tournament champion Eastern Illinois on October 10 in Charleston, Ill. Two days later, she picked up 10 saves in a scoreless draw with defending OVC regular season champ Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
With the consecutive double overtime affairs,
Stephens spent a total of 220 minutes in front of the net on the road trip. In the two games, JSU was outshot 30-13.
In each contest,
Stephens made her biggest saves in the overtime periods. Against EIU, she stopped four shots in the first overtime period to preserve the tie. In the game against Southeast, she recorded five saves in the two extra periods to claim her sixth shutout of the season.
Stephens has helped the Gamecocks to a 6-3-4 record with a 1-0-3 mark in the OVC. Jax State is 2-0-3 in its last five games, which includes four shutouts by
Stephens. She has 14 shutouts for her career, which puts her second in the JSU record book.
The Gamecocks will return home on Friday, October 17, for an OVC showdown with Tennessee Tech. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field.
