Jax State Rolls to 34-7 Win Over Tennessee State

JACKSONVILLE - Christina Balint scored in the 93rd minute of play to lift Jacksonville State to a 1-0 victory over Austin Peay Sunday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Field.

Balint's goal gave JSU the win in a game it dominated statistically. The Gamecocks outshot Austin Peay 21-0 and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Balint, who took only two shots in 68 minutes of play, said the scoring play was set up perfectly.

"First, there was a gorgeous cross by Kristin (Fleeger) and a header by Ashley (Smith)," said Balint. "Everything was set up perfectly."

Although Jax State stayed on the offensive end of the field throughout the game, regulation ended with the contest still knotted at 0-0. With the team's fifth tie of the season looming, Balint needed only 2:45 to record her first career goal and give the Gamecocks the win.

Early in the overtime period, Fleeger crossed the ball to the front of the net. Smith was waiting and headed the ball over to Balint for the game-winning goal. Balint becomes the 10th player on the JSU roster to record a goal this season.

Jennifer Atchley, one of three seniors honored by the Gamecocks in a pregame ceremony, got the win in front of the net. Other seniors honored on Senior Day included Christina Simpson and Kim Peterson.

Atchley said the team really wanted to get the win as opposed to another tie.

"That was great," said Atchley. "It is always good not to lose, but to get a win really helped our place in the conference race."

The win ups the team's overall record to 8-3-4 with a 3-0-3 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Gamecocks also keep their seven-game unbeaten streak alive with a 4-0-3 record.

JSU's last overtime game that did not end in a tie was played in 1999 when the Gamecocks downed Florida Atlantic 3-2 in overtime.

JSU head coach Lisa Howe said her team played well during crunch time in the OVC race.

"I thought they (Austin Peay) did everything they could to win or get the tie today," said Howe. "They did a good job of that and it made it very difficult for us to score. We were able to settle down in the end and get a goal and I am proud of that."

The Gamecocks will hit the road for the final three games of the regular season. JSU's next game will be a non-conference battle with Union College Friday, October 24, at 2 p.m. Jax State will return to OVC action the following Sunday for a 2 p.m. showdown with Morehead State before concluding the regular season on October 31 at Samford.
