Nashville-Jacksonville State's Jennifer Brenneman has been selected as an Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete for 2003-04, as announced by the league office late Thursday. The award is the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes and is given annually to three men and three women senior student-athletes for their accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena and because of their leadership qualities.
The six winners were selected from a group of 15 finalists by a vote of the OVC faculty athletics representatives. Honorees must have performed athletically with distinction, earned at least a 3.25 grade point average and conducted themselves in a manner which has brought credit to the student-athlete, his or her institution, intercollegiate athletics and the OVC.
Brenneman is a three-year starter as an outside hitter for the Jax State volleyball team. She is serving her fourth year on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, while carrying a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Her major is biology and she plans to pursue a medical career.
A native of Minier, Ill., Brenneman is the all-time digs leader at JSU with 1,080 and is ninth in all-time service aces for the Gamecocks with 137.
During JSU's membership in the Atlantic Sun Conference, Brenneman was a three-time All-Academic selection. Brenneman is a member of the JSU Scholar Athlete Hall of Fame and Sigma Phi Epsilon Honor Society. She also works with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and serves on the coaching staffs for two juniors volleyball squads.
The remaining award winners are: Lindsey Gustafson of Murray State University, Philip Kuhl of Eastern Kentucky University, Stephanie Ward of Tennessee Technological University, Charles "C.J." Weber of Eastern Illinois University and Rhet Wierzba of Austin Peay State University.
