JSU Overcomes Slow First Half for a Win at Alabama A&M

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Justin Haddix threw three touchdowns and rushed for another to lead No. 8 Western Kentucky (9-3) to a 45-7 win over No. 17 Jacksonville State (8-4) in the first-round of the NCAA Division I-AA football playoffs on Saturday.
Western Kentucky struck quickly, scoring three touchdowns on their first four offensive plays.
The Hilltoppers took a 7-0 lead on their second play of the game after Shannon Hayes caught a 30-yard pass from Haddix. Matt Lange added the point after to give WKU the lead with 13:38 left.
After holding the Gamecocks and forcing a punt, Moore broke free on the first play and raced 75 yards up the middle to give the Hilltoppers a 14-0 lead with 12:33 remaining.
Western Kentucky then intercepted a Maurice Mullins pass and on the first play from scrimmage, Haddix tossed a 28-yard touchdown to Casey Rooney to give WKU a 21-0 lead with 10:41 left in the first quarter.
The Hilltoppers then added a 45-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the second quarter after Haddix connected with Hayes for the touchdown as Western Kentucky built a 28-0 lead at the half.
WKU added to the lead after Haddix scored on a one-yard run with 3:25 left in the third quarter as the Hilltoppers held a 35-0 lead at the end of the third. Western Kentucky pushed the advantage to 42-0 with 13:32 left in the fourth quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Chris Miller.
Jax State scored its only points of the night on a 28-yard pass from Maurice Mullins to Milas Randle. Steven Lee added the extra point as the Gamecocks scoring drive went 59 yards in seven plays.
Lange added a 37-yard field goal with 4:37 remaining for the final margin.
The Gamecocks finished with a season-low 104 rushing yards and was led by Marcus Mithcell, who finished with seven carries for 35 yards. Mullins finished 4-for-13 for 60 yards through the air.
Western Kentucky rolled up 534 total offensive yards, including 353 yards on the ground. It was just the second team to rush for more and 100 yards against the Gamecocks over the last eight games.
