JACKSONVILLE -- Jacksonville State University head coach Jack Crowe has announced the permanent captains for the Gamecocks' 2003 football season. Seniors DeWayne Cuffie, Jonathan Dryer and Levet Jones have been tabbed as leaders for the upcoming campaign with the title of team captain.
Cuffie, a Sylvester, Ga., native is the Gamecocks starting safety and has led the team in several defensive statistical categories for three years.
Cuffie played in all 11 games as a junior, recording 38 tackles with 22 solo efforts. He also recorded a team-high four fumble recoveries, including two against second-ranked McNeese State on Oct. 19. Cuffie prepped under Neil Roberts at Worth County High School in Sylvester.
Dryer has 28 games of experience under his belt after seeing much playing time over the last three years. The Fort Payne (Ala.) native is a 5-foot-11, 226-pound senior linebacker and saw action in all 11 games a year ago.
Dryer recorded 38 tackles with 20 solo stops as a junior. He also added a fumble recovery during the Gamecocks 28-22 win over Sam Houston State. Dryer prepped at Fort Payne High School under coach Jerry Elmore.
Jones, a native of Mobile, will be the team's only captain on offense. The 6-foot-4, 224-pound offensive lineman had a impressive spring practice and will anchor the line at left tackle.
Jones has seen action in eight games in each of the previous two seasons. As a sophomore, he recorded two tackles and a forced fumble during a win against Samford. Jones prepped at Vigor High School in Mobile under coach James Perine.
JSU plays its first game of the season on the road against Alabama A&M on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 6:30 p.m. at Louis Crews Stadium
