BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Jacksonville State upped its season record to 11-3 with a three-game sweep over Gardner-Webb Saturday (19-30, 19-30, 15-30).
The Gamecocks held early leads in all three games and were able to withstand late rallies to win the match 3-0.
JSU opened the first game with four straight points before Gardner-Webb answered with a 3-0 rally to pull to within a point. That was as close as the Bulldogs would get, however, as the Gamecocks pushed the lead out to 18-12, and eventually took a 30-19 win.
The second game was the most contested of the match. After the teams exchanged the lead several times, back-to-back kills gave GWU a 9-6 lead. Gardner-Webb again took a 14-13 advantage before JSU unleashed a 17-5 rally to win the game 30-19.
In the third game, Jacksonville State jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead and never looked back, en route to a 30-15 win.
Freshman middle blocker Shari Weyer led JSU with 13 kills and five blocks in the match. Jessica Starck was right behind with 12 kills on the night, while Kisha West added 16 digs.
"I thought we did a real good job keeping our concentration," said JSU head coach Rick Nold. "Offensively, we played really well and the freshmen on the team also stepped up and had a good match."
The Gamecocks will return to Ohio Valley Conference action on Friday, October 3, with a road match at Tennessee-Martin.
