JSU Claims 83-76 Win Over Mississippi Valley State

JACKSONVILLE – Craig Agee caught five passes for a career-high 156 yards and a touchdown and Maurice Mullins threw for a career-high 200 yards as Jacksonville State claimed its second straight Ohio Valley Conference Football Championship with a 47-9 win over Southeast Missouri State.
Eight players were responsible for touchdowns as the No. 14-ranked Gamecocks (9-1, 7-1) claimed the 2004 OVC championship outright.
We had strong motivation coming into this game,” said JSU head coach Jack Crowe. “We played everybody we could and we now have at least 15 players that have scored a touchdown this season.”
The Gamecocks scored first when they marched 60 yards in five plays and scored on a 3-yard run by Raynodd Zeine. Gavin Halliford kicked his first of five PATs as JSU led 7-0 with 12:09 left in the first quarter.
Dustin Simonhoff’s punt landed the Gamecocks on the 1-yard line and JSU needed just six plays before Mullins found Agee for an 84-yard touchdown. JSU led 14-0 with 2:02 remaining in the first.
The Indians advanced to JSU’s 23-yard line before John Scott grabbed an interception to steal the momentum. Mullins’ quarterback sneak lost two yards on the first down, but Bonds raced 79 yards for his first touchdown and the Gamecocks went ahead 21-0.
Bonds finished with 10 carries for 128 yards and two touchdowns. He had two receptions for 53 yards.
Derek Kutz answered for the Indians on a 25-yard field goal with 1:49 left in the half.
Mullins, who went 10-of-14 for 200 yards and a touchdown in the first half, turned the second half over to red-shirt freshman Matt Hardin, who finished 6-of-13 for 75 yards and a touchdown.
In the third, Bonds had a 13-yard touchdown run with 10:57 left in the period, and back-up tailback Clay Green scored on a 24-yard rush set up by a Russell Green interception as the Gamecocks took a commanding 34-3 lead.
The Gamecocks continued its romp in the final period as freshman wide receiver Chris Sanders scored on a 20-yard touchdown run, and William Bowie recorded his first career touchdown with a 13-yard pass from Hardin.
SEMO finally found the end zone at the end of a 1-yard scamper by Adam Casper. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful for the final margin.
Led by Lamarcus Rowell and George Summers, the Gamecocks held SEMO’s Jamel Oliver to just 10 carries for 42 yards. Andrew Goodenough went 18-of-41 for 124 yards and four interceptions.
The Gamecocks will make the school’s 12th appearance in the NCAA football playoffs and will learn their opponent at 12 noon on Sunday.

Jacksonville STate claimed the school’s 17th conference championship on Saturday. It also marks the NINTH time in school history the Gamecocks have back-to-back titles.
Thirteen JSU seniors played in their final regular-season home game on Saturday and are the winningest four-year class since the Gamecocks left the Division II ranks in 1993. This year’s senior class has a four-year record of 27-17.
William Bowie became the 15th JSU player to score a touchdown this season after catching a 13 yard pass from Matt Hardin with 6:35 left in the fourth quarter.
Oscar Bonds finished wtih 128 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns and moved from ninth into fourth place on JSU’s single-season rushing record. The Russellville, Ala., native now has 1,147 yards this season.
Sophomore Craig Agee, who leads the nation in punt returns, finished the game with three returns for 62 yards (an average of 20.6 yards per return).
The Gamecocks finished the SEMO game with 13 plays of 20-yards or longer, including SIX passing, three rushing, two punt returns, one kick return and one interception. JSU now has 85 TOTAL plays of longer than 20 yards this season.
Jacksonville State has scored a touchdown on its opening drive seven times this season, and scored on the opening drive of both halves three times this year.
