JSU Gets First Win of the Year

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Jacksonville State’s Oscar Bonds and John Pettus both were named to The Sports Network 2004 All-American team, as selected by more than 100 I-AA sports information directors and selected media and released on Monday. Bonds was named second-team runningback, while Pettus earned third-team offensive line honors.
“Obviously, our numbers on the offensive side of the ball for the season indicate that we made some big plays,” said JSU head coach Jack Crowe. “The catalyst was the offensive line, which was anchored by John, and Oscar handled much of the duties carrying the football.
“Both players are very deserving of this honor and I’m proud they were recognized for their efforts on the field,” added Crowe.
Bonds, a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, was a first-team All-OVC selection and finished with 1,263 yards and a school-record 19 touchdowns. He also had 12 receptions for 150 yards.
The Russellville, Ala., native was a three-time OVC Player of the Week and set school records for rushing touchdowns and total points scored. He finished third in the nation in scoring, averaging 10.36 points per game, and was ranked 11th nationally in rushing.
Pettus, a four-year starter for the Gamecocks, helped a Gamecock offense set six team school records, including rushing yards per game (260.3), pass completion percentage (55.7), passing efficiency (141.78), average yards per pass (8.72), total offense per game (442.6), and all purpose yards per game (559.6).
The Lineville, Ala., native was a first-team All-OVC selection after starting all 11 games as a senior as JSU finished sixth nationally in rushing offense, seventh in scoring offense and eighth in total offense.
It marks the 10th time in school history that multiple players were named All-American in the same season and is the first time since Jeremy Sullivan and Richie Rhodes were selected to the teams in 2001.
Jacksonville State won its second straight Ohio Valley Conference Championship this season and advanced to the NCAA I-AA playoffs for the second consecutive year. The Gamecocks have an all-time record of 14-2 in OVC play since joining the league prior to the 2003 season.
