RICHMOND, Ky. – Maurice Mullins tossed a 3-yard pass to Jarvis Houston with just :31 remaining as Jacksonville State (3-0, 1-0 OVC) rallied for a 30-23 Ohio Valley Conference win over Eastern Kentucky (0-3, 0-1) in the conference-opener for both teams Saturday evening.
The Gamecocks went 89 yards on 14 plays with less than six minutes to play to record the school’s seventh Division I win with less than 2:00 minutes to play.
“We’ve got a strong heart,” said JSU head coach Jack Crowe following the game. “Our defense played great, especially when they we’re put into some tough situations in the fourth quarter.”
Jax State had built a 17-3 lead with just 4:19 left in the third quarter, but the Gamecocks had three straight fumbles that led to EKU points and the Colonel defense held on a fourth down play deep in JSU territory that led to another score and gave the Colonels a 23-17 lead with 10:09 left in the game.
It all began after the Gamecocks fumbled a punt and EKU recovered on the 38 yard line with 2:33 left in the third quarter. Three plays later, Mark Dunn scored on a two-yard run up the middle and Phil Kuhl kicked the point after to cut the lead to 17-10 with 1:17 left in the quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Gamecocks fumbled and EKU recovered at the 31 yardline, but the JSU defense held the Colonels to a Kuhl 36-yard field goal with 14:18 left in the game as EKU cut the lead to 17-13 with 14:18 left in the game.
After the kickoff, the Gamecocks fumbled on the third play and Justin Rivers scooped up the fumble and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown as EKU took the lead for the first time. Kuhl’s extra point gave Eastern Kentucky a 20-17 lead with 14:00 left in the game.
The Colonel defense then held Jax State on a fourth down and inches at the JSU 33 to take over and four plays later, Kuhl kicked his third field goal of the game, hitting from 21 yards out, to give the Colonels a 23-17 lead with 10:09 left in the game.
The Jax State offense answered and tied the game at 23-23 after Bonds scored on a 39-yard run to cap a 74 yard, seven play drive with. Hallford missed the extra point, but the game was tied with 7:43 left to play. Bonds, who had just 29 yards at the half, finished the game with a career-high 150 yards on 31 carries and three touchdowns.
After forcing the Colonels to punt, Mullins orchestrated an 89-yard drive that led to the winning touchdown. Mullins was 5-for-5 for 53 yards during the drive and connected with Houston three times, including the 3-yard game winner with just :31 left to play. Hallford added the point after for the final margin.
Mullins recorded his second straight 100-yard passing game, finishing 15-for-23 for 157 yards and one touchdown. Houston led all receivers with 55 yards on five catches. Seven different Gamecocks had receptions, including a career-high four for 33 yards by Danny Tillery.
With the game tied at 3-3 at the half, Jacksonville State took the lead early in the third quarter after Lamarcus Rowell recovered an EKU fumble and returned it to the Colonels 39 yard line.
Six plays later, Bonds scored on a two-yard run for the touchdown. Hallford added the point after as JSU built a 10-3 lead with 10:22 left in the third.
The Gamecocks then had their longest scoring drive of the season after going 93 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown. Bonds scored on a 5-yard run and Hallford added the extra point as JSU built a 17-3 lead with 4:19 remaining and looked to have the game in hand before the three straight turnovers.
Jacksonville State took the early lead after marching 63 yards in 13 plays on its first drive. Hallford kicked a 25-yard field to give JSU a 3-0 lead with 8:31 left in the first quarter. The Gamecocks had a couple of chances to extend the lead in the first half, but missed a pair of field goals.
Eastern Kentucky tied the game at 3-3 late in the second quarter after Phil Kuhl connected on a 27-yard field goal with just :10 remaining in the quarter to tie the game at the half.
Jacksonville State returns to action next Saturday against Murray State. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. at Paul Snow Stadium.

THE EASTERN KENTUCKY GAME
JSU’s 30-23 win over EKU was the SEVENTH win in the final 2:00 of the game since the Gamecocks left Division II in 1993. The last win was a Kory Chapman 7-yard rush with :28 left to give JSU a 35-29 win over Tennessee Tech on Sept. 29, 2002. JSU also kicked a 41-yard field goal by Steven Lee to claim a 20-17 win over Alabama A&M on Aug. 31, 2002.
JSU’s fourth down conversion in the first quarter made the Gamecocks 7-for-7 on conversions this year and now made the last eight straight, dating back to last season. JSU converted another fourth down in the second quarter to improve to 8-for-8 on the season, before snapping the streak in the fourth quarter.
Senior Oscar Bonds rushed for a career-high 150 yards on 31 carries and three touchdowns. It was his second straight 100-yard rushing game and it was the first time a JSU player had 30 or more carries since Rondy Rogers had 32 carries at Stephen F. Austin on Oct. 13, 2001.
Gavin Hallford’s 25-yard field goal on the opening drive for JSU was the third straight game the Gamecocks’ scored on their opening drive. JSU scored a touchdown in the first two games on their first possession.
