JACKSONVILLE, Ala.-- Jacksonville State's baseball team split a double header with Marshall University on Saturday at Rudy Abbott Field.
Following Friday's 2-1 defeat to the Thundering Herd, JSU took game one of the Saturday series, defeating Marshall 5-4.
The Thundering Herd opened the scoring in the top of the second, when Roddy Stieger scored, from third, on a
Tony Drinkard wild pitch. JSU would answer in the bottom half of the inning on a
Richard Turner single, as he drove in
Matt Page from second base.
Jax State would add another run in the bottom of the fourth, and take a 2-1 advantage over Marshall, when
Ray Bearden scored from third on a
Turner ground out to shortstop.
Marshall would regain the lead, adding two in the fifth inning, and tacking on one more in the sixth, to take a 4-2 advantage over the Gamecocks.
JSU would add one in the seventh, as
Bret Pettus would drive in
Brian Piazza, folliwing
Piazza's two out, triple to the right, centerfield gap.
Jacksonville State would tie the game when
Page doubled down the rightfield line, scoring
Cory Tucker from second base. The winning run would come two batters later, when
Winston Pearson doubled down the leftfield line to
Clint Carroll.
JSU's
Tony Drinkard (1-1) got the win, going four and third innings, allowing four hits and recording five K's.
Marshall's Brendan Bump (1-1) took the loss in the two thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits.
In Game Two, Marshall used a four run, sixth inning to hand the Gamecocks their fourth loss of the season.
After the two teams swapped one run innings in their half of the third, Marshall posted two runs in the top half of the fourth on a two out, single by Stieger for a 3-1 lead.
Jax State would try to rally, down 7-1, in the bottom of the ninth, when
Piazza doubled down to drive in
Pearson. JSU would another run on a
Austin Stein sacrifice fly to rightfield, driving in
Pettus, but Marshall would shut down the Gamecocks and take a 7-3 win.
Marshall's Chris Cummings (1-1) took the win. Cummings went four innings, facing 20 Gamecocks batters, allowing only one run on five hits, while fanning four.
JSU's
Danny Andres got the loss in three and two third innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three.
JSU will return to action when they travel to instate rival Troy on Wednesday, March 2nd for one game with the Trojans. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field.
