JACKSONVILLE – The Gamecocks held their second practice on Saturday and head coach Jack Crowe continues to be impressed by several freshmen and newcomers.
The first week is used for teaching and is a learning process for the younger players as the team works in helmets and shorts.
“We’re seeing how fast we can go with the older players and we’re trying to identify the younger players that might be able to fill in the 25 slots that will make the dress squad,” Crowe said following the 2 ½ hour afternoon workout.
“There are seven or eight freshman and newcomers that I’m really anxious to see in pads,” added Crowe. “Marcus Douglass and Daniel Jackson just look a lot more mature than your typical freshman. Derek Hill, Darren Williams and Colin Moore are guys that have caught my eye in the first two workouts. Another freshman that doesn’t look like a freshman running around is Deonte Carter.
“Devin Phillips, who was one of the guys that impressed us in the spring, comes back stronger and just looks a whole lot different in a uniform than when he left,” said Crowe. “He’s a walk-on that is on the verge of becoming a scholarship player.”
Crowe also mentioned the play of Albertville’s Michael Darden, who played quarterback in high school, but was moved to tight end last season and sat out as a redshirt.
“Michael came in as a quarterback and we moved him to tight end and It just seems like he’s gone way past from where he was in the spring,” said Crowe. “He came in here bigger this fall and he may be the best tight end that we have right now.”
Crowe feels like that there will not be any position changes among the freshman and newcomers after the second full day of practice.
“I don’t expect us to move any players to different positions,” Crowe said. “It appears that we have everyone in the right position, and that is the first time that we’ve got it right. I think it’s because we know more about our players.”
The Gamecocks will use Sunday for picture day before returning to the practice field Monday morning to continue working in helmets and shorts.
