JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team will close a four-match homestand this weekend with a pair of key Ohio Valley Conference contests at Pete Mathews Coliseum, beginning with a 7 p.m. meeting with Eastern Kentucky on Friday.
The Gamecocks (12-4, 6-0 OVC) will put their seven-match win streak on the line on Friday night when they face the defending regular-season champion Colonels (9-11, 2-4 OVC). They will then turn around and take on second-place Morehead State (15-7, 5-1 OVC) at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free for all fans.
JSU has been hot of late, winning all six league games and its last seven overall by virtue of a 3-0 sweep. The Gamecocks have been on fire in the league, as well, claiming victories in their last 16 matches against OVC foes, dating back to a 10-match streak to close the 2005 campaign.
It has been more of the same on the Gamecocks front, with junior Abbey Breit claiming her fifth OVC Offensive Player of the Week award in the seven-week season, one of which the Gamecocks were off. She leads the league and is ranked third nationally with 5.76 kills per game.
Opportunities have risen for the junior outside hitter, thanks to outstanding play around her, especially from senior setter Emily Withers. The Cincinnati native ranks 17th in the nation in assists with an average of 13.05 per game. She is second on the school’s all-time assists list with 3,739, just 477 behind Selena Carpenter’s record.
Breit, a Louisville, Ky., native is fifth on the school’s all-time kills list with 1,207 in her three years at JSU. She needs just 16 kills to pass Christina Cary in fourth and is closing in on Amy Reaves’ career record of 1,428.
Video of both matches will be available on www.ovcsports.tv, and Saturday’s match will be broadcast on WJXS-TV24 in Jacksonville.
