JACKSONVILLE – After posting one of the most dominant defensive performances in school history last week against Eastern Kentucky, the Jacksonville State football team looks to continue its drive for a third Ohio Valley Conference title in four years Thursday night as the Gamecocks play host to OVC-rival Murray State.
Three Gamecocks earned OVC Weekly honors after the EKU game. Senior running back Clay Green claimed OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors after rushing for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Senior linebacker LeMarcus Rowell was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after posting two sacks and two tackles for loss. Junior punter Zach Walden claimed Special Teams Player of the Week honors after averaging 45 yards on six punts, including a school record 75-yard punt.
Last season, Green rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown in a 28-23 victory at Murray State.
The Gamecocks (2-2, 2-1 OVC) enter the game with the ninth best scoring defense in the nation, giving up an average of just 12 points per game, and look to shut down a Murray State offensive attack that averages 21.8 points a game.
On offense, JSU is averaging 23.2 points per game, the second most in the OVC, and 196.8 yards per game rushing. Green is third-best in the OVC, averaging 102.2 yards per game on the ground.
Thursday's game will be broadcast live on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast and will begin at 5 p.m. The game can also be heard on the JSU Radio Network with Matt Coulter and Ed Lett calling the action. The broadcast will be available on the World Wide Web via www.jsugamecocksports.com.
