BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Junior Abbey Breit was named the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, just one day prior to the team’s home opener against Georgia State Tuesday night.

Breit, a 5-10 outside hitter/middle blocker from Louisville, Ky., received the honor after putting together a monster weekend in the University of Louisville Hampton Inn Downtown Classic in her hometown.

“Abbey had another tremendous weekend for us, and for it to come against such top-notch competition and in front of so many of her family and friends must really be special for her,” JSU head coach Rick Nold said. “We had several players that had a big weekend for us, and we hope that we can carry the momentum from the tournament into what will be a tough home opener on Tuesday.”

She led the Gamecocks (3-0) to the title and earned tourney MVP honors after totaling 65 kills (5.82 per game). She head 23 kills in JSU’s 3-2 win over No. 12 Louisville on Friday before recording 24 in a three-game sweep of Missouri Kansas City on Saturday. Against the Kangaroos, she attempted just 34 attacks and posted a .676 attack percentage.

The honor marks the sixth time that Breit, the 2005 OVC Player of the Year and preseason All-OVC honoree, has been named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week. She received the honor four times as a sophomore and once as a freshman.

The Gamecocks bring their game to Pete Mathews Coliseum for the first time on Tuesday, when they play host to former Atlantic Sun Conference foe Georgia State at 6 p.m.
