ATLANTA – Jacksonville State University and Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS) have agreed to a partnership that will carry all four Gamecock home football games live on the Regional Sports Television Network during the 2006 season.
The agreement sets JSU up for the most live television games in its history and is one of the largest television packages in NCAA Division I-AA football. The Gamecocks' home football games against Southeast Missouri State, Murray State, Tennessee State and Samford will all air live on CSS.
“We wanted to expand our television coverage and we felt like JSU and CSS were a perfect fit for each other,” said JSU Athletic Director Jim Fuller. “It’s an opportunity to showcase, not only the JSU Athletic Program, but the entire University to a regional television audience.”
CSS is a 24-hour regional sports network serving approximately 4.5 million cable subscribers across 11 southeastern states and is based in Atlanta.
Launched in 1999, the network is a partnership between Comcast Corporation and Charter Communications and provides a comprehensive mix of live sports programming, sports news and in-depth sports analysis exclusively geared toward fans in the Southeast.
“I think we are a much followed team,” said JSU head coach Jack Crowe. “I think there are a lot of people that have made a direct or indirect connection in what we have accomplished in the last few years.
“I’m very thankful for the opportunity to be on television sets in an area as large as 11 southeastern states. I do anticipate there is going to be a heavy following of this team because of this network.”
Chris Stewart and Ryan Brown will split the play-by-play duties, while former Gamecock player and Birmingham radio personality Herb Winches will provide color commentary for all four telecasts.
Winches, a four-year letterwinner for the Gamecocks from 1968-71, was voted team MVP of Coach Charley Pell’s 1970 Orange Blossom Classic Championship squad. He hosts a radio afternoon show in Birmigham on WJOX radio and has over 30 years of experience in television broadcasting. He has been voted Alabama’s Sportscaster of the Year five times.
Stewart is a broadcast veteran and has spent the past four years working with the University of Alabama Football Post-game show. He is also the radio voice for Crimson Tide basketball and hosts a morning show in Tuscaloosa each weekday.
Brown, who attended Jacksonville State from 1994-99, also hosts a radio show for WJOX radio in Birmingham each afternoon and has done numerous games for television.
Jacksonville State’s season-opening football game at Furman will be televised by CSTV, while other road games will be carried locally on a tape delay basis.
