VIDEO: Coach Crowe Comments on Wednesday's practice
JACKSONVILLE – Head football coach Jack Crowe was “generally pleased” with Wednesday’s two-a-day practice, which followed a disappointing scrimmage on Tuesday.
“I’m generally pleased after having some concerns following last night’s scrimmage on some players that were on the fringes,” Crowe said following the afternoon practice in pads. “We had a chance to look at some film and got some work today and it’s a lot clearer of where we are from top to bottom.”
Crowe did mention that Weaver High School product Shawn Green would not be redshirted and will be a part of the 2006 squad as a true freshman.
“Last night, after making the decision earlier that we were going to redshirt Shawn Green, it was obvious halfway through the scrimmage that we are going to play him this year,” Crowe announced. “He is really a talented young man. I don’t think this team can afford to redshirt him, quite honestly.”
The Gamecocks will hold their fifth scrimmage of the preseason on Thursday and then the coaching staff will announce the 56-man dress roster for the season-opener, which is now just 10 days away.
“There are some other developing young players that we want to see in the scrimmage tomorrow before we finally decide on the 56,” said Crowe. “The big part of that is the kicking game and how much they can help us in the kicking game.”
The team will concentrate on the kicking game for most of Thursday’s scrimmage, which will be held at Paul Snow Stadium.
Jacksonville State opens the 2006 season at nationally ranked Furman on September 2. Kick-off is set for 12:30 p.m. and the game will be carried live on CSTV.
