NASHVILLE – Jacksonville State has been picked second in the 2007 Ohio Valley Conference preseason football poll by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, the conference announced on Tuesday morning at its annual Media Day at LP Field.
Two-time defending OVC champion Eastern Illinois (150 points) garnered eight first-place votes and is picked as the favorite, just ahead of the Gamecocks (139), who received six first-place votes.
Tennessee-Martin (126) is picked third, followed by Eastern Kentucky (119 points), Tennessee State (103), Tennessee Tech (79), Murray State (60), Southeast Missouri State (57), Samford (46) and Austin Peay (21), who rejoins the Conference for the first time since switching to non-scholarship football in 1997. The re-addition of Austin Peay puts the OVC at 10 football-playing institutions for the first-time in its 60-year history.
Jacksonville State won back-to-back OVC championships in its first two years in the league (2003, 2004), going 7-1 in each of those campaigns, and returns 10 starters and a talented group of younger players.
The Gamecocks placed three players on the preseason All-OVC squad, led by senior offensive guard Devon May.
May, a native of Columbus, Ohio, was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team last year after playing a total of 558 snaps and graded out at 84 percent for the season on the offensive line.
Junior kicker Gavin Hallford, who led all OVC kickers in scoring with 73 points last season, was selected as a preseason pick after connecting on 34-of-35 on point after kicks and making 13 field goals in his sophomore campaign.
Junior punter Zach Walden, who was ranked 19th nationally in punting last season with a 41.2 yard average and earned OVC Special Teams Player of the Week honors three times, was also named to the preseason All-OVC team.
Jacksonville State reports to campus on August 5th and will practice in pads for the first time on August 10th.
