JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State sophomore Abbey Breit has been voted to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 4 Volleyball First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Thursday.
Breit, a middle blocker from Louisville, Ky., has taken the Ohio Valley Conference by storm in her second season with the Gamecocks. A Preseason All-OVC selection, she leads the conference with 4.61 kills per game and is averaging 4.86 per game in OVC matches, over one half of a kill better than teammate Suzi Terrell, who is in second.
In addition to her on the court accomplishments, Abbey carries a 4.0 grade point average as a chemistry major with a minor in biology. As a freshman in 2004, she was a member of the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and received the OVC Academic Medal of Honor.
“Abbey is a tremendous asset, not only to our program, but to Jacksonville State University,” JSU head coach Rick Nold said. “She has been a key to our offense and has stepped up in a big way when we have needed her to, but she is also an outstanding student and person.”
She was one of six players named to the first team in District 4, joining Anne Morrow of OVC foe Tennessee Tech. Breit now qualifies to be placed on the ballot for the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team, which will be named at the end of November.
Breit, a three-time OVC Offensive Player of the Week in 2005, is on pace to shatter the school’s single-season record for kills per game. Her current average is almost one kill better than Christina Cary’s record of 3.71, set in 2003.
