JSU's Garner, Estes Break School Records at TSU Tiger Indoor Invite

JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville State men’s basketball team found out on Monday that it will host former Atlantic Sun foe Georgia State on Feb. 23 as part of the sixth annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters. The game will be played at Pete Mathews Coliseum and will tip at 7 p.m. CT.

The Gamecocks (4-19, 2-13 Ohio Valley Conference) and the Panthers (6-15, 3-8 Colonial Athletic Association) were paired from a pool of 100 teams, and the game will be a part of the event’s 36 non-televised games that were paired after the 14 televised pairings were selected. As part of the BracketBusters agreement, JSU will pay a return visit to the Panthers in Atlanta for a non-conference game in the 2008-09 season.

It will mark the 33rd time the two have met on the hardwood but will be their first meeting since the 2002-03 season, which was the Gamecocks’ final season in the A-Sun. JSU has won 22 of the previous meetings, but the series is tied, 8-8, since the Gamecocks moved to Division I and joined the Panthers in the A-Sun for the 1995-96 season. The Gamecocks are 11-3 against GSU in Jacksonville, and JSU head coach Mike LaPlante is 3-3 against the Panthers.

The two teams played 15 times between 1956 and 1963 before not meeting again until the 1995-96 season. The last meeting was a 78-76 overtime win for the Gamecocks on Feb. 21, 2003, in Atlanta.

The game will be broadcast live on the JSU Radio Network, with Mike Parris calling the action. The broadcast can also be heard on the World Wide Web at www.jsugamecocksports.com.
